Cranbrook New Town
Most of us know that there will be a new town in
In order to bring this new town into being, EDDC will employ three people for three years – a Project Director (£50,000 - £56,000 per year), a Spatial Planner (£29,000 - £31,650 per year) and an Administrator (£13,850 - £15,825 per year). One usually adds to that some 20% to cover national insurance contributions, employers pension contributions, etc. This means that the bill for these three people will come to about £335,000 - £372,000 over the 3 years. This is quite reasonable – after all, a town needs good planning doesn’t it? Otherwise you end up with a second-class town, and no-one wants that do they?
HOWEVER, this town at 2,900 homes will be smaller than Seaton (which currently has around 3,400 properties and, if the developers have their way, around 4,000 properties). What do you see in the list above (the “shopping list” for a new town”) that this “old” town of
Why does a “new town” automatically get these facilities when an “old” town doesn’t deserve them? This is the only “old” town in the area that doesn’t have these facilities (we can’t count the facilities at the holiday village as EDDC doesn’t count them – and they are happy to see the holiday village demolished and replaced with no facilities at all - except a tiny visitor centre for tourists (who won’t be able to stay in the town) and an extended Seaton marshes (for visitors who won’t be able to stay in the town).
Funny that –
Of course, EDDC Planning Department is very short-staffed (one third of posts vacant a few weeks ago) so the sooner they get Seaton off their hands the sooner they can all concentrate on their “jewel in the crown”

Why don't we all move to Cranbrook!

It's not a bad idea, except the scenery here is currently better. Perhaps if eddc allow Liatris to stuff Seaton before they build Cranberry (or whatever, but I'm sure there's a "sauce" connotation or two here), then we can upsticks;0)
I guess the theory goes that with an "old" Town like Seaton all the proper facilities will be in place so management and direction will not be needed. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons this does not apply to Seaton, so what is obviously required, like for the failing schools scenario, is a team of dynamic motivated individuals ready to channel resources and labour into furnishing the Town with adequate services for the 21st Century. We have been told by Local and National Government that things are not looking good, so lets see some action!!!

Yes, I feel that the beginning of some of Seaton's current problems is (arguably) end of Seaton Urban District Council with property and powers going to East Devon District Council. From that point on, the old town theory is no longer valid as the facility management is more remote.
We need some commitment from EDDC, to give to this old town, some of the facilities that other towns have. It could be a point for district councillors to be pushing for, come an election.
I love the idea of a Casino at the Knowle. Much more suitable than Seaton. Unfortunately the tax changes in Gordon Brown's latest budget are said to make casinos less profitable. Ah well - we'll just have a secondary school here please (with the associated sports facilites) and some of the Council offices. If Cranbrook needs one then we must need one too.
if the grammar school moved to Cranbrook Seaton could have the grammar school buildings for the new secondary school it will need if the Liatris proposals go ahead. We become a more sustainable community and the grammar will be happier closer to the home of most of the people attending it. Or we cn try and force a ballot on converting the secondary back to a non selective school.
