Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Brilliant job. What a lot of work has gone into this objection.
Thank you so much for doing this on our behalf.

I wholly concur with Sue. Your objections are beatifully presented and will hopefully along with all of the other individual objections provide the nails in the coffin of this ill conceived and despicable venture.

Hopefully this supermarket project will go ahead, and be the final nail in seaton's coffin. I'd gladly use a hammer to pound it in myself given the opportunity.

LOL, and your rationale for that is what exactly?
At least we have someone posting for the plan as is, but it would be easier if you had a "handle" there's far too many anonymous ones. It makes the threads easier to read;-)

Ooooh, sounds like someone doesn't like Seaton. I wonder why?

I must say, I find it odd that Anon 6.45 does not give a reason for his/her dislike of Seaton. Surely any thinking, reasonable person would state why they dislike Seaton and why they want to see the downfall of a town?

It never fails to amaze me how much unreasonable, unaccounted for hatred there is in this world.....

Perhaps they wouldn't let him have a half price ticket on the tram!

I think you have to be a resident for that Sandra;-)

Just a few lines to let you know that I am following your blog with interest. I support your campaign and did of course send in my objections to the eddc.
I would point out that I do not have any vested interest in the outcome of the redevelopment, except as a resident and in terms of the general future prosperity of the town.

I perhaps differ slightly from your position in that I believe that the majority of the redevelopment site should be used for the purposes of tourism.
As a tourist town we need many more facilities in order to attract the high-spending visitors that are now frequenting this area of the coastline, but there is little choice in terms of accommodation and, to make matters worse our eminent district council is considering allowing the closure of the only large bed-space facility, ie: Lyme Bay Village, on top of the loss of Seaton Heights Hotel with its beds and associated facilities.

Seaton can be a great tourist venue again with investment in providing good quality accommodation, interesting attractions, and regular events throughout the year.
The county council, by considering allowing this site to be considered for housing, is inflating the potential value of the land and therefore allowing the owners to get a sniff of a quick profit, rather than focussing on developing their business further and contributing to the prosperity of the town. One thing is for sure, Lyme Bay will not be spending any money on improvements for their customers while the planning application rumbles on, so they will probably be contributing to a steep decline in business and it will end up closing !

Seaton doesn't need 500/600 houses in the forseeable future and there are other sites that could be used for house building, but there aren't any other sites that are suitable for tourism needs. If this application is approved, then the future growth of Seaton as a tourist resort will be strictly limited.
Anyway, sorry for prattling on so much, I only intended to scribble a few lines. I thought I would share a little verse with you ' wot I wrote ' to look at the situation in a more light-hearted way.
All the very best with your campaign and I hope the council eventually see sense and listen to your group and the local community.

The council is rushing to change Seaton town

They want us to give up our tourism crown

Instead we’re to be a large housing estate

For the rest of East Devon, for that is our fate.

There won’t be the jobs for all of these folk

They’ll drive miles to work gushing carbon and smoke

And the site for these houses is tourism land

So the building of houses should be positively banned.

If the holiday village was refused change-of-use

Then they’d have to invest and abandon this ruse,

If they’re short of the cash or can’t reach a decision

Then they should be selling to those with more vision.

In a Dormitory Town things can get quite low

‘Cos the folks who will come will be ‘overflow’

They will fill up the Docs, the Dentist and Schools

and if we don’t speak up, then we’ll be the fools !

Perhaps the anonymous blogger who so hates Seaton is an avid photographer whose mind prefers symbols of decay to those of renewal and that says a lot about their mental attitude to the whole of life. Negativity and small-mindedness are not condusive to happiness. Try to be a bit more positive and supportive and you'll find the pictures will change

I think it's one of the developers on a bad hair day!

Find the blog very interesting indeed. With so many people against the proposed development it seems crazy for it to be considered!!!
Seaton is a unique place and should be enhanced not destroyed. I love all the small shops and would welcome more of them! No supermarket please!
Also with global warming, the temperature will increase so holiday makers will not need to go abroad but will want to utilise our south coast - we have a magnificant location we need to enhance it for tourism. Also air traven has got to eventually be restricted due to the damage being caused to the environment and lessening fuel reserves.
We are on the cusp of either puuting the nail in the coffin of Seaton or moving in front of the times and capitalising on our assets.
Can planners try to think of the future and agree on something to be proud of for future generations!
