Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

A publicity suggestion - Branscombe

Two people have suggested to me that a small group ought to go over to Branscombe where the media people are and stage a quick Stand Up For Seaton demo.

Sorry, I can't manage it - I have obligations I can't get out of - but anyone else with the opportunity - off you go! If you do go, concentrate on the environmental pollution - the lorries and the monsoon drain, as the people there will mostly be environmental correspondents.

What a distressingly small minded attitude. You've revealed you're true colours this time.

Trying to use the biggest potential environmental disaster to hit the UK coast in 25 years, to publisise your comparitively miniscule worries, beggars belief. The caption joke is neither witty nor clever and just makes a mockery of this entire site. A sad shot in the foot.

When the beaches are thick with tourist-repelling black sludge I trust we can all rely on the tireless efforts of the SU4S crew to come to the rescue?

Sometimes you have to conceed to a bigger, more holistic, less selfish view. Difficult, i grant you, when you are used to this siloed, cynical twaddle-peddling.

What a disgusting, repellant, unpleasant ANONYMOUS post and what little insight you have into what is going on. This will be an enormous environmental disaster for Seaton and will last much longer than any clean up operation on this coast.

And yes, without a doubt when the beaches are full of black sludge SU4S will be out there - you can count on it.

Sometimes we are told that the things we say about other people are actually true of ourselves and that we use them as a mirror to ourselves.

Do I detect a little of the pro-planning application lobby here at last!

fortunately there are plenty of people and lots of money to deal with oil on the beach. But if there is anything we can do we'll be there to help - do you have any constructive suggestion for what we can do? I've been turned away from the beach by the police, probably because they fear people making off with the container contents.

Meanwhile there are lots of people with plenty of money trying to turn Seaton into a disaster. Where will you be when pollutants from the building site kill the estuary fish and the birds that feed on them?

Sorry anon, but I find your post itself to be small minded. As far as I can make out (it is a confusing use of metaphor and rant) you're complaining about this blog entry and the later appearance of the napoli photo...I think.
According to your narrow logic, we shouldn't use photos of impending disaster, yet this is precisely what the media does, everyday, you must spend a lot of time complaining about this.
It is interesting to note that TD, Liatris et al who have been the target in many of these cartoons have kept a dignified silence, in that aspect I have a modicum of respect for them...I even hope that sometimes, even Terry Dinham might have a wry smile at our small attempts at satirising him.
I understand that it is a British trait to be able to see humour in the darkest of moments, perhaps it's what keeps us sane, for people like TD, it is no different, just that our priorities/agendas differ.

As Sandra said, in the event of debris being washed up, we'll be there, incidentally, I do help keep the beaches clean now when I walk there...I doubt you do.

Should you wish to expand further on your meaning, rather than littering this blog, you can email me at contact@ed-he.org.uk (you will have to cut and paste that as I try to discourage spam) where you can abuse the caption author directly...I might enter into a rational debate, if the argument is rationally put.

Had it not been for humour in its darkest hours the British might not have weathered the Second World War quite so successfully.

Lampooning is a mark of a democratic society - and we should be grateful that we are able to do it. Has this correspondent never heard of Hogarth and his effect on Georgian society?

Let's take a leaf out of the Danish cartoons handbook of peace, harmony and reconciliation.
Perhaps our "anonymous" jihadist friend who has taken offence would like to assist by officiating at the public beheading of Mel G?

Yes, you can be sure that we'll be there on the "Sweep Up 4 Seaton" ticket!

I couldn't agree more with Mr. whodoyouthinkyouare kiddingmrhitler that you have to summon up that old WW2 cameraderie in the face of adversity!

We can take on Goliath!

What a mess there is on Branscombe Beach. It is the equivalent of seven Napoli's (just for the infill) being carried in 20 tonne bits through the Axe Valley and Seaton. What a mess of lives this will make. With that much going by lorry more than a few sea birds will suffer premature extinction

I wouldn't if i were you - There is a Environmental disaster happening at the moment along the Jurassic Coastline, A suggestion Get some T-Shirts made up and help with the clean up operation along the coast.

1. Exposure of your campaign
2. Would help the environment

Not being funny but if you protest by standing up behind someone talking about a ship being beached won't look good for your campaign now would it.

No, nobody went there, the beach is now (imho rightly) closed. Despite what the other anon wrote, we do care about the evironmental impact. I personally wonder why the vessel wasn't taken straight to the nearest port to it rather than up the channel.
But we now have two links on the blog for people to contact for how they can help, when the time comes for it. I should reiterate, no-one should be going to Branscombe beach at this time, any oiled birds you find should be reported in and stay clear of any dubious packages on the beach.
