Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Spot the difference competition

Hat tip: Sidmouth Herald 03/03/07

A proposal to build a marina in Sidmouth will involve building a new swimming pool before the old one is closed to make way for the development...be a bit of a blow for Sidmouth residents to lose any leisure facility y'see

We won't get housing as "good" as that!

Seriously, we won't get good at all - the developer has no sustainable procurement policy and their sustainability statement was a mere 13 pages- about 10 of which simply re-states current minimum policy.

Basically, whatever the lowest standard of building you can get away with is, that's what we will get. Tomorrow's slums today!

Oh PLEASE let them have a VERY LARGE supermarket on the site of the current swimming pool and car park! Grant me this one wish!

as EDDC constantly tell us that swimming pools aren't economic and that shopping is a leisure activity of course this should be a supermarket and not a swimming pool. But you're wrong, sandra, Seaton's pool is very nice, thank you. It may not be much use to serious swimmers but its warm and the water slide/ rock pools are fun. We took 7 children there Saturday and they had a great time.
It's used by groups ranging from babies to age concern. Don't sell Seaton short.

I haven't commented at all on swimming pools on this blog that I can recall, so I am not sure what you mean.

However, I think the point that archmaster made is that Sidmouth has a whole BIG SWIMMING POOL and may be about to have two, whereas we have a FUN pool, which, yes, I think is great but does not have the facilities that pools at Sidmouth, Honiton and Axminster have.

No chance of getting Seaton kids swimming in the Olympics!

Yeah, the point is, Sidmouths existing facility is a more recent facility than the Seaton one, yet developers are quite blithely saying "we'll get rid of that one, but we'll give you another one first"...whereas our developer says
"I want to put a bulldozer through it"

It isn't a criticism of the pool, but of differing treatments.

vukxzI cannot imagine what justification any right thinking local Government Official, elected or otherwise could possibly give for taking away an opportunity for our children to learn to swim. This is a Life Saving Skill, especially in our area. I think provision of Swimming Facilities with training opportunities should be a Mandatory requirement for all seaside Towns. The statistics are there to be seen, many drowning accidents are avoidable. Every young life needlessly lost to drowning should be on the conscience of those with the power to prevent it.

I hadn't thought of that but it is a really important point.
