Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Letter from HRH Prince Charles in Liatris objections file!

Popped in to Sidmouth today to check on latest news. Objections are now up from 713 to about 800 letters. Many letters are from groups, etc. so the number of objectors is definitely well over 1,000. Letters of support remain the same at 8.

One interesting letter is from HRH Prince Charles. He says that whilst he cannot offer his personal opinion on the matter he wishes to draw the Council's attention to a letter of objection which he has received and noted.

Also long, interesting letter from Natural England giving their comments on the scheme. As soon as I have time to type it out, I will put it on the blog.

I'm sure if he were able HRH would offer support for the noble aims of SUFS. One thing which puzzles me is who decides on the wider scale who might be offered the chance to express an interest in the issue, most specificaly from the Conservation viewpoint. I know for instance that the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust does much stirling work in the field of conservation and maintenance of the habitat for wild birds and I would guess there are others whose views would be respected and who might wish to be involved in protecting the environmental and ecological health of the area.

Well, you can guess who decides, can't you - EDDC. There are some "statutory" consultees (South West Water etc) but then they choose them - carefully. You can look on the EDDC Planning Portal to see what major consultees have said.

In this context, they got hold of Devon Wildlife Trust (I can't find a response from them), Natural England (who have responded and have serious misgivings, I will put up their full response as soon as I can) and the Barn Owl Trust (not sure why, don't think there are any but I may be wrong).

At least one group that was on the major consultees list had not received the CD just before Christmas so I sent it to them. Fortunately, they have responded now.

I wrote to every single major consultee and sent most of them our objection.

there are barn owls in the vicinity of Seaton but not in the development site area. I understand the SDT wrote to a number of groups about the development. To some extent it is up to those interested in protecting the environment to see that relevant groups are aware of what is happening here.

I wrote to every single major consultee with our worries about the development. Many of them replied and some engaged in useful correspondence. The Barn Owl Trust never replied.
