Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

Is there anyone out there who wants to be positive about this development?

Is there anyone reading this blog who wants to put the positive argument for this development? We REALLY would like someone to do this and promise that (as long as it is polite) we will publish their entire post. All we ask is that you identify whether you are a local resident of Seaton (i.e. an EX12 2... resident) and whether you have any personal or financial interest in this development, as it would be unfair not to declare this when posting.

We have not yet met anyone who is for this development but we are told that there are a lot of people out there who are and that we are in a minority. So, please do feel free to participate here.

I think we all wanted to be positive about the development, but unfortunatly, the developers are out to cash in as much as possible, and want to ruin the town.

I do understand that any developer involved in this would only participate because they would make profit, and I don't mind them making profit, IF and only IF they give the town what it wants.

The one positive thing about this development plan is the way it has concentrated the minds of all the groups in the town both cultural and business as well as showing the civic side to be 'flim-flam' in it's lack of leadership and direction.

Was it not the Seaton Town Strategy Forum that initiated much of this groundswell and did they not propose an alternative plan that would see this town meld together the new with the old.

Perhaps if a more non-competitive co-operation between the groups presented a more united front on the way forward - we might just get what we want as a town instead of outsiders imposing their own views on what they think we want, or should have.

Personally, I believe we will get the town we deserve, the question you have to ask yourselves is - what kind of town do we want and what are we prepared to do about it.

I know the loss of the swimming pool has been highlighted but I think that what should be emphasised is that swimming is not just another hobby for the clapped out elderly but a lifesaving skill for all, especially the children of Seaton and the local area. The EDDC should be actively promoting and providing a decent facility for the Town. Perhaps if logic and commonsense prevail and they don't sell the "family silver" (Council Land)to the developers a smaller "deal" might be struck with the Supermarket moguls to have one built. Best Regards Laurence
