Stand Up For Seaton (SU4S)

Community Action for Seaton's Regeneration Area, 80% owned by Tesco - a floodplain on a World Heritage site bordered by nature reserves, tidal river, the sea and the unspoilt town. SU4S is a state of mind - no members, no structure, no politics. SU4S has objected to 2 planning applications by Tesco, including one for a massive superstore/dot com distribution centre which led to the recent closure on the site of 400 tourist beds with the loss of 150 jobs,a gym and pool - all used by locals.

A better idea for the regeneration area

Anonymous says in a comment below: "Come up with a better idea for regeneration ...". Anyone willing to have a go at this? Have a look at the Development Brief (see link at right hand side of this blog) and compare it with the developer's illustrative plan (also linked on the right hand side) and spot the differences!!! to make a start:

Developer: shops and 450 houses, visitor's centre and tramway
Development brief: shops, 400 houses, visitors centre, tramway, live/work units, boulevard, new tourist facilities, community facilities.

And to clear up a misunderstanding: I am NOT suggesting that the holiday camp should be pickled in aspic and kept as it is. What I am saying is that currently it has 450 tourist beds and a lot of community facilities. We want to ensure we do better than this, not worse, in any regeneration plan.

Development plan: riches (financial) for the developer
Regeneration plan: riches (some financial, some quality of life) for the community

We did not get world heritage status by having a holiday camp and we will not lose it by it either.
Come up with a better idea, thats what we all must do, but lets think of the town and not peddle our own little agendas.
We can push the Council to impose section 106 restrictions on any planning permission, one of these restrictions could be to provide a sports complex/day care nursery for young and old, an area for light industrial, for the town.
I think the existing holiday camp does very little for the town and that is why the town is so depressed. Build houses okay why not are they going to build them on stilts. I have seen the holiday camps flood to about eight foot. If they build houses we need them to be an enviromental flagship which would make people want to live in Seaton also we need to provide houses for youngsters that are affordable ZED homes have constructed sustainable an affordable homes in Cornwall, lets make sure we get some here. Do we need a Petrol station well the Tower charges around 4-6 pence a liter thats 20-25p a gallon more than Exeter, so yes we need some competition. Another supermarket well we didn't need the last one, but can we do with out it now it provides employment and handy and economic shopping. A DIY store no we have Bradfords and a hard ware store, however when I go to BQ or homebase there are always other locals there so maybe we do, I would rather spend the money in Seaton. We have a lovely town and right now it awaiting its next stage the Tower Motel/holiday camp/Racal all need sorting out, but we must work together with developers to ensure that the town gets the best, I am heartened to think big companies want to spend big money for us. Lets not dig our heels in lets work with these people who yes need to make money and their first offering was always to make them the maximum, but they will compromise its what developers do, so lets tell them want the town needs and what they need and then everyone will gain. Because Seaton is slowly dieing currently the shopping area is less the bustling and the majority of harbour road is a mess. Lets work together and make it a flagship town and people will come!

I am unsure what "anonymous" in the first comment means. I have published ALL comments sent to me. I have edited only one of these comments because it had things in it not specific to the regeneration area, and I made this clear when I posted it.

I do indeed want to start a debate but I really have no idea what this comment means. Could the writer enlighten me?

I have no idea what the anolymous poster who put the first comment means. I have published everything that I have received. I have edited only one comment because it had things in it not to do with the regeneration area.

I do indeed want to encourage a debate, but could the writer please get back to me and explain his or her comment please.
